Ocean
Paradise
Situated
on Zanzibar’s picturesque North East coast, overlooking the
turquoise Indian Ocean, it is as the name suggests a little piece
of paradise.
From your arrival at Zanzibar Airport, the resort is a meandering
45 minute journey through un-spoilt scenery, passing typical African
villages where the way of life has changed little for hundreds of
years.
At Ocean Paradise
Resort Zanzibar, you will be greeted by a blaze of colour as you
sweep down the imposing driveway, saluted by a Masai warrior as
you pass through the entrance gate and be captivated as you arrive
in reception and look out over the resort and the azure blue sea.
Mature coconut palms swinging in the breeze, white sandy beach,
beautiful landscaped gardens, traditional style round chalets with
pitched makuti roof, a stunning waterfall feature and the largest
swimming pool in Zanzibar are just some of the sights that await
you. A big smile and the greeting of "Jambo" will be the
first words you hear, as you begin to feel the warmth that the people
of Zanzibar are famed for.
Designed
as a traditional African roundhouse but featuring all the creature
comforts you could need, our rooms and suites are truly unrivalled.
Set in 6.5 hectares of serene and colourful gardens, leading to
a white sandy beach and the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean,
each room is indeed an idyllic setting.
Nestled under a pitched makuti roof, each room is sea facing with
large patio doors that open up to a private balcony, where you can
sit and take in the sedate pace of African life.
A peaceful sleep is guaranteed in a fully air-conditioned room with
comfortable twin or king size beds draped with mosquito netting.
The addition of satellite television, direct dial telephone, mini-bar,
hair dryer and a unique curved en-suite bathroom, with shower, toilet
and bidet, complete the facilities that will make your stay relaxed
and enjoyable.

the most beautiful coastlines in the world, the Pongwe Beach Hotel
is a true paradise retreat, set within a secluded bay on the east
coast of Zanzibar; an island in the Indian Ocean just off the coast
of Tanzania, Africa. We are a modestly sized hotel, with sixteen
traditional beach-side cottages, and an intimate atmosphere.
The perfect beach
Pongwe Beach Hotel offers the perfect paradise island experience.
The bay's clear blue waters — protected by the reef one kilometre
from the shore — are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. If
the midday sun becomes too strong you can retreat into the shade
of the palm trees that line the white sandy beach, and sip a long,
cool drink.
Relax
Pongwe
Beach is a tranquil location; the ideal place to relax and enjoy
Zanzibar’s distinctive, mellow pace. You can dive into the
crystal clear waters of the Indian ocean, or stretch out and soak
up the sun on the beach. It is the ideal retreat for those looking
for that extra special honeymoon, or a holiday with an air of exclusivity.
Enjoy
We have our own traditional wooden long boat with which our guests
may gain access to deep waters before and beyond the reef. This
provides the ideal opportunity to go game fishing for tuna, marlin,
barracuda and king fish. We also have snorkeling out at Mnemba Atoll
where you can will find many coral species and marine life; and
at Kizimkazi where sharks, dolphins and turtles can be found. Scuba
diving can be arranged whether it be a day dive or a Padi open water
course.
Dine in style
Our consultant chef from England — who has spent time in the
kitchens of the Dorchester Hotel, London; and the famous Lucas Carton,
one of Paris’ finest 3 star Michelin restaurants — has
advised and trained our own in-house chefs, so you can be assured
that the crab, king prawn, and other fine local food will be prepared
and cooked to the highest of international standards.

Matemwe
Beach Village
Matemwe
Beach is a small guesthouse which is located out on its own on a
long stretch of classic palm-lined, white sand beach on the the
North East coast of Zanzibar Island. Just off-shore from the guesthouse
is the world-famous Mnemba Atoll, whose circling reef has some of
the best diving in East Africa. Along the beach from us are palm-thatched
villages, where friendly local people live a traditional life dominated
by fishing. Matemwe really is close to the classical notion of paradise.
The simple makuti-thatched lodge and bungalows are situated along
a glorious strip of palm-fringed beach. The main lodge has comfortable
living areas, friendly staff and a very sociable atmosphere generated
by the type of clientele they attract.
At the guesthouse our intention is to provide a high standard of
accommodation and hospitality at reasonable prices.
Many of our guests come here primarily for the diving at Mnemba.
Others come here to relax after having climbed Kilimanjaro, or having
been out on safari in the Serengeti. In other words, we tend to
get a nice mix of professional outdoor types, who get on well together
and create a nice atmosphere around the place.
The lodge is owned by Zanzibarian Suleiman Nyanga and managed by
me, Gail. I am South African and have been in Zanzibar since 1995.
My husband Gary (who is an Ozzie) runs our dive operation.
We have three different types of room here at Matemwe.
The best and most popular are the 5 suite rooms that were opened
and the end of 2004 and are as shown in the picture opposite. They
are primarily designed for couples, having one large bed but there
is also single bed under the stairs and a barazza bed for small
children. The rooms are set back from the beach and have an upstairs
verandha area with lounging chairs, perfect for reading or an afternoon
snooze.
Then there are seventeen
standard rooms at the guesthouse, all of which have ensuite bathrooms,
hot water and fans. Seven of these are on the front row and are
set back a little from the beach for privacy. The other 10 rooms
are further back from the beach and offer a glimpse of the sea and
a cool breeze though the night.
Our star room is the Asali suite which is made for honeymooners,
with one double bed and is separate from the rest of the lodge.
It houses its own plunge pool and comes complete with two dedicated
staff to cater for your every need.
One of the main reasons for coming to Matemwe is for the world class
diving at Mnemba atoll.
We usually say that there is enough variety on Mnemba for about
4 to 5 days worth of good diving, maybe 8 to 10 dives, although
the reef is always ready to spring a surprise or two.
Mnemba is a circular reef, with aquarium conditions on the inside
and some good wall-diving on the outer. Diving here is a year-round
event, with reasonably good conditions to be found on the atoll
under almost all weather conditions and visibilities of 20 to 40
metres are the norm. We regularly see turtles and dolphins here
and are often lucky enough to see (or even get a tow from) whale
sharks and pilot whales.
We have a full 5 star IDC PADI dive school at the lodge. We are
able to offer the full range of PADI certificate courses, as well
as try dives and snorkelling trips for the non-divers and now that
we have a swimming pool, we are able to offer the complete course
when staying at Matemwe. For PADI open-water courses we are happy
to take a referral certificate from those of you who want to do
the theory and pool work before you come.

from US$83 per person sharing per night
